Question:

What is your opinion about face covering by women in Islam?

Answer:

It is written in Quran that “the things which are open are open” and Allah has not mentioned anywhere in Quran for women to cover their face. That is in fact their own defensive mechanism. I have met many women and I asked them about it and they told me that they considered it safe and if they come out without covering their face then they have to confront the greedy eyes of males. But every glance that is cast on women by men must not be taken always as having bad intentions. Allah Almighty says in Quran that ‘He has created the mutual attraction between couples’ either they are young or old obviously this instinct is always there which create imbalance in both sexes. And it is not restricted to East only. Being the champion of boldness and freedom western countries still suffer such dilemmas. If a man happened to look at woman there with keen eyes she might report it in the police station. Now question arises when there is so much freedom then why it is considered bad practice. In fact they have got some other kind of complexes; they suspect such person as a series killer.

Our women in fact ought to live in such a restricted way of life style for so long that they feel safe by wearing shawls or by covering their faces. Much to their surprise if ever they tried to avoid this they cannot. As it has become part and parcel of their lives. They are not forced by men to do so. They themselves consider it virtuous and do it by their own constitutional self. Allah almighty has not ordered to cover face or hands. Some extremist introduced the shuttle cocks and in the present age of congestion when thousands and thousands of people move at a time on roads it is not necessary to cover your face. Quran neither emphasizes for such act nor is it proved by hadith. Rest of the decision is up to the women alone for how much they want to cover.
